My Retreat Day

On Easter Monday, I took what I call a “Retreat day” and had a whole day devoted to doing things that would happen if I went and stayed at a fancy and expensive retreat to recharge my batteries. Ideally, it would’ve been great to have a week away in some luxury place but without spending the money and time, I created something that can have a similar effect. I thought I’d write about my day to inspire you to create one of your own (even if just partially).

Goal setting to start the day right

The day started with a healthy breakfast at home and then a friend and I headed out to Okere Falls. With coffees we sat outside in the sun to do the most important activity of the day. We pulled out our notebooks and we talked through the various areas of our lives and where we need to set some goals. We each had three areas and jotted down ideas of what changes we wanted and the first steps to do later that day to get things moving. By doing this goal setting first thing, it let us decide where we are heading and the ability to reflect on them all day long.

Okere Falls walk

Next up was the Okere Falls walk which immersed us in nature with birdsong, native trees and powerful flowing water. It is about a 30 minute walk on a well-maintained track and great for a quick exercise boost.

Jetty jumping

Next up, we returned to the Okere Falls jetty across from the cafe and jumped off it twice into the cold water. It took my breath away but had the desired effect of invigorating body and mind. It was a buzz and definitely gave a boost to my energy levels. The benefits of doing this range from reducing inflammation, manage stress and anxiety, to becoming more resilient. I recommend Wim Hof’s book on this topic, if you’re interested.

Hot pool soaking

A quick lunch break was followed by a soak at the Polynesian Spa. Pools at various temperatures allow soaking and reaping the benefits of relaxing and soothing tight, tense muscles while taking all stresses away. I suggest Rotorua locals get the Monthly pass to make this a regular practise.

One thing that is necessary for a Retreat Day is a massage. We had a Thai massage as it includes stretching during the massage, so you feel your body release tension. Afterwards my neck felt longer and it put me into a dreamy state of relaxation.

Heading home late afternoon, it was time for a walk with hubby and then actioning the tasks related to my goals to end the day. Taking time to make this day happen has set me up for good energy levels this week and making me want to stick to my morning routines, include things that are good for me and make me feel well. Recharging this way is a treat you deserve too.

Let me know if your’ll be organising yourself a retreat day soon and what ideas you have for replenishing your mind and body. I’ll be wanting those ideas for my next retreat day.
