Meet Kylie

Hello there!

Here’s a little about me and why I started a raw slice and cake business and why I’m still passionate about it today.

Volunteering experience

In 2017, I spent 6 weeks volunteering at a health retreat in Australia where I was immersed in a healthy lifestyle and had time to ponder what is it that I enjoy doing most in life. The answer to that question, for me, was being in the kitchen, creating delicious food from scratch. Reflecting on what I do when in the kitchen – having five or more recipes on the go. Whipping up vegan aioli and butter so I know what’s in it, rather than buying store products that have so many added stuff that I don’t want to eat. I’d be creating a recipe for dinner but also a soup for tomorrow’s lunch and of course there would be a raw slice in the mix too. So this is what my spare time or happy place was. When I realised that and returned from my time over in Australia, I started my business focusing on raw slices and energy balls. I spent months testing ideas and having many people taste my creations, getting feedback on what was good and what needed more tweaking.

Why organic?

I had certain standards for myself when eating so these were also applied to my Wholly Chocomole food. I only have organic food in my house and I see the benefit of eating organic as an important way to keep pesticides out of my body. There is a great video of a family that were tested first then ate totally organic for two weeks and were tested again with amazing results. Once I had seen that video, I was convinced that eating organic was the way to go.

Why Vegan?

Another factor important to me is following a vegan diet. In 2013, I trained for an ultramarathon and this event requires a lot of long runs and a lot of back to back runs ( where you run for 5-6 hours one day and the next day run another long run of say 4-5 hours). I realised how recovery was such an important thing and read a few books to find out what was working best for other ultra runners. One that resonated with me was a book called Eat and Run by Scott Durek.  I trialled a vegan diet and saw the benefits in my recovery from running and felt so good I continued eating as a vegan. Since then I have also learnt about the benefits of a vegan diet on the environment by watching a documentary called Cowspiracy and the cruelty involved in our meat and diary industries that I do not want to be a part of. I am a avid animal lover and can not be part of their killing and torture.

Dietary needs…

Wholly Chocomole’s food is also gluten-free due to the wide effect that gluten is having on people and how good many feel when they remove it from their diet. This also is why no refined sugar is used as this addictive substance is really effecting our energy levels, weight management and cravings.

Raw slices…

The use of wholefoods and keeping them raw is another important factor to me and I like knowing that the ingredients I use does not have long label lists. Almonds just state almonds on the bag, cacao powder is pure, etc. I know eating this food is a great way to feel good and to be fueled well to get the best out of life.

Where are all the yummy raw slices?

Lastly, another factor that inspired me was a case of creating what I wish existed. I hated going into cafes and seeing a cabinet full of big cake slices and no offerings for vegans or if there was something, it was tiny and looked terrible so I wouldn’t want to eat it anyhow. I love creating raw slices for people who have previously had to go without. It is so rewarding to see how happy people are when they bite into a delicious treat free from things they don’t want to eat or can’t eat. I also love offering a selection of different flavoured raw slices so those people who once had no options, now have many and can’t choose which one to try (a great problem to have) yay!

Raw slices everyday…

For myself, I like balance in my life – I want to mostly eat healthy but still also want to have treats regularly. Hence, this is where Wholly Chocomole comes in with good-for-you treats making it possible to have healthy treats everyday.
