Sustainability

A strong priority for the Wholly Chocomole business is reducing waste where ever possible. Here are various ways we strive not to create waste in the first place.

Jars for Kombucha and Vegan Butter: Those who purchase butter and kombucha join the system of returnig the
jars the next time they pick up their order. As most of these orders are weekly or fortnightly, there are a lot of jars
involved but all the jars are reused again and again.

Containers to cafes and pick them up next time: Every drop off at the cafes that get supplied by Wholly
Chocomole are done in containers that are great for stacking in freezers. The cafés keep them and at the next drop off I pick up the empty ones and drop off the full ones. I can’t imagine how many boxes would’ve been put in the
rubbish without using this system.

At markets I encourage customers to bring their own containers: This is a challenge to customers to bring their own container and many do. Especially regulars who attend the Rotorua Farmer’s Market every Sunday. It is a great habit to get into when you know you are purchasing something that will be protected and easy to pop in the fridge when you get home.

Reuse boxes that my stock is delivered in for online orders: An area that is hard to reduce waste in is the bulk
stock I buy from organic businesses. I avoid waste by ordering in bulk so needing less containers and I reuse these
containers for storing the stock over and over again. I use the boxes to deliver orders and when sending large
orders around the North Island that were ordered online.

Compostable bags: When serving Wholly Chocomole slices at the markets, I use brown composable paper bags. I have no control over whether these bag make it to the compost heaps but I’m sure many do. This is a much better option than cardboard boxes which are bigger in size and take much longer to break down.

***Next up is having crockery plates and cutlery at the markets for reusing when eating there.***
